An offshore storm that's been pounding much of the immediate East Coast could soon transition into a subtropical storm, forecasters said.
Nor’easters are large, intense areas of low pressure that typically develop off the East Coast during the late fall, winter and early spring. The storms are named after the strong northeast winds that travel along the Atlantic Coast, and can bring increased rain or snow. A powerful nor’easter caused at least one death last month.
An October nor'easter churning in the Atlantic Ocean is kicking up gusty winds and large waves on Tuesday along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard. Large breaking waves were lashing at the pier in Virginia Beach on Tuesday morning and prompting warnings of life-threatening rip currents up and down the coastline.
Parts of N.C. Highway 12 in the Outer Banks remain closed as an offshore nor'easter impacts the coast.
NBC reports the storm is churning hundreds of miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean, but its impacts could still be felt along the U.S. coast with strong onshore winds and flooding. Most of the rain is expected to remain offshore, though Cape Cod and Nantucket could see particularly wet conditions Thursday.
The highway has been battered for nearly a week by wind and surf associated with a nor’easter that has lingered a few hundred miles east of North Carolina. Wind gusts of 50 mph and waves of 14 to 16 feet have caused flash flooding and “substantial” beach erosion from Nags Head to Buxton, officials said.
The Ravens game Sunday looks exceptional, weatherwise! Tailgaters will have to endure some colder temperatures Sunday morning in the 30s and lower 40s. By kickoff, temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s with plenty of sunshine. Wind shouldn't be a big factor either.
The storm continues to bring gusty winds up to 40 mph to the Jersey Shore, along with rough surf conditions and several rounds of minor tidal flooding.
Gusty winds will be strongest on the Cape and Islands, extending from Boston to Providence as high pressure spares New England from any major impacts.
Sunshine, crisp and comfortably cool temperatures will continue through the weekend. Wednesday begins with sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid-40s in many areas. Plan on a temperature closer to 50° along the bay front. Sunshine sends temperatures into the mid and upper 60s by the middle of the afternoon.
